Matuella might be the best player that the Yankees can get their hands on because of an injury. But before we get into that lets do a little background on Matuella
Background:
Matuella is a college pitcher at Duke University. He stands 6’7″ feet tall and weighing in at 220 lbs. He is a junior this year and has had some arm and back issues that have popped up lately.
Stuff:
Fastball right now is his best pitch with it sitting from 93 to 97. MLB has his fastball grade of a 70 grade with Kiley McDaniel rating it as 65 pitch currently with the potential to get to a 70 grade.
Curveball is Matuella’s next best pitch. MLB grades it as a 60 pitch with Kiley McDaniel has the pitch as a 50 future grade with a 60 future pitch.
Changeup rounds out Matuella’s arsenal. It’s also his worst offering with it trailing both of his other pitches.
Performance:
The reason Matuella is getting lots of buzz is because during last year his velo jumped up. That also is the problem for him as he had a few injuries last year and only pitched with the new velo for 58 innings.
Now with all that said about Matuella most people would think that there is no way that he falls to the Yankees at pick 16. But there is a good amount of reasons that he might. One is teams are wary of velocity jumps as it normally means that some injury is going to be coming. Also Matuella didn’t pitch many innings at Duke last year. He also didn’t pitch at all last summer. Plus he has been hurt to start the year. This is pushing his draft stock down from being one of the top picks in the draft.
Yankees need to take a shot if they get an opportunity to draft Matuella as all publications say he has number one upside. That type of upside is hard for the Yankees ever get to draft. So while there might be a good amount of risk to Matuella it’s a risk they should take it.
