2015 Draft Prospect Profile: Garrett Whitley

Garrett Whitley is a center field prospect from NY.  He plays at Niskayunna High school and is a wake forest commit. Being a cold weather kid (players in the upper part of the country are considered cold weather kids as they don’t play baseball all year round and their high school seasons start later because of the cold weather) he isn’t scouted as much and doesn’t have the experience that others have.  But he had somewhat of a coming out party last year when he popped up late on scouts radar.

Body:
The reason he is getting a lot of play in the middle part of the first round is because he is 6’2” and 200 lbs.  He also performed very well for scouts at the end of the summer circuit last year and usually the big hitters(national cross checkers and scouting directors) were at those events.  Usually a scouting director will only see a player towards the end of the time which is fine for Whitley as he will be up and going before the draft.

My take:
I see the Yankees being all over this kid but my guess is they would prefer to take him with the 30th pick but it might not come to that.  Almost all teams now are scouting the northeast differently now because Mike Trout.  Because of this you will see some of these kids go a little earlier than they have gone in the past but I think the Yankees will be all over him.  He is built and looks the part of a baseball player.  They also have first hand knowledge as it is really easy for them to scout him.  Plus two of the five Google images that pop up when you search him have him wearing a Yankees cap.  Coincidence I think not.
