So the 2015 draft is less than eight months away from happening. While some people would think that it is too far out to even think about the draft, most teams are putting together list of players that they want to see again. While the Yankees had some major changes when it comes to the player development side of the minors one major factor has stayed the course which is Damon Oppenheimer will continue running the draft for the Yankees.
Oppenheimer has had some huge success running the drafts. Under his watch they have drafted Austin Jackson, David Robertson, Dellin Betances, Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy just to name a few. Now he also has had some bustswhen it comes to some other picks, C.J Henry and others. I believe that this year Oppenheimer will be looked at to go after a strength of what he does which is drafting pitchers with most of his hits being college pitchers. I believe the Yankees will aggressively go after pitching because the farm system is lacking in it right now and with all of the July 2nd guys that they have signed. Almost all of them have been position players. College pitchers would be a great way to offset their international strategy.
In the coming weeks I’ll be doing profiles on likely pitchers that I think the Yankees might target in the first round with first on the list next week is Cody Ponce.
