Now that the World Series is over the teams are starting to make plans concerning next year. While the playoffs were going on teams were still evaluating players for next year’s MLB draft. Before we can really talk players we need to see what position the Yankees will be in come draft day. Here is the draft order before teams lose draft picks for signing.
- Phillies
- Reds
- Braves
- Rockies
- Brewers
- Athletics
- Marlins
- Padres
- Tigers
- White Sox
- Marines
- Red Sox
- D-backs
- Rays
- Orioles
- Indians
- Twins
- Nat’s
- Giants
- Angels
- Astros
- Yankees
- Rangers
- Mets
- Dodgers
- Jays
- Royals
- Cubs
- Pirates
- Cards.
So the Yankees have the 22nd overall pick as it stands right now. Going back to look at previous 22nd overall picks there has been a lot of talent taken with these picks. Kyle Gibson, Kolten Wong and Marcus Stroman were all 22nd overall picks. Hunter Harvey and Grant Holmes were also taken with that pick and they are top 100 prospects
I believe there will be around thirteen qualifying offers given out this year. Some teams will probably resign their players but I believe you can safely say 8 will be transferring teams this year. With that being said I don’t think the Yankees will go after any players who have a qualified offer attached to them. So I believe the Yankees draft position will on get better.
The first ten selections are protected so if one of those teams signs a player with a qualifying offer they would lose their 2nd round pick. Of the teams higher than the Yankees I believe you could see the Nats, Angels, Astros, Indians, Red Sox and M’s all sign free agents and forfeit their draft picks. All of those teams are in win now mode and could look to upgrade their rosters. Also everyone but the Nats aren’t losing players so you would believe they would be trying to add pieces.
So for now the Yankees have the 22nd overall pick but I believe that there is a very strong likelihood they will be close to picking where they did last year. More money in the draft is always a good thing. Next up we will be discussing this year’s draft class and how they fared.
