A Grand Slam by Nunez lifts T-Yanks over Threshers 8-2

The Tampa Yankees are desperately trying to make a playoff appearance and if their bats stay hot, they might do just that. Taylor Garrison (ERA 2.25) had the start for the Yanks as they took on the Clearwater Threshers on Thursday night at Bright House Networks Field.

Mike Ford helped Tampa take a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning with his second homerun of the season, a solo shot on a fly ball to right. In the bottom of the 4th, the Threshers tied the game at 1 with a RBI single by Art Charles. Garrison pitched just 4 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 run; striking out 4 batters. LHP Conner Kendrick (ERA 5.78) then took over in the fifth for the T-Yanks.

In the top of the sixth, Reymond Nunez hit a Grand Slam on a ball to left lifting Tampa to a 5-1 lead. With bases loaded again in the same inning, Eric Jagielo hit a two run single to give the Yanks a 7-1 lead. Cito Culver then scored off a pass ball by Clearwater’s Corey Bass. In the bottom of the sixth, the Threshers were able to tack one more on for a 8-2 game.

Kendrick pitched five innings, allowing just two hits and one run; striking out 4 batters, earning the win and advancing to (6-8) on the season.

The Tampa Yankees are now 2 1/2 games back behind the division leading Daytona Cubs. This final three game series, the T-Yanks will take on the Daytona Cubs at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. With just one loss to the CUbs, the Tampa Yankees’ playoff hopes will be gone.
