So MLB pipeline and Baseball America both released mock drafts. It’s very interesting to see the different takes that Callis and Mayo have compared to Hudson Belinsky.
First up we will take a look at MLB. In it they have local(to me at least) is Joey Wentz a left handed high school pitcher from Shawnee Mission KS. This is a pick that I believe the Yankees would make. Wentz has been rumored to go as high as top 10 in the draft. He’s backed up a bit but lately but flashes two plus pitches in a lively fastball that is a plus pitch. He throws an above average curveball. Right now he is flashing an above average change up that he doesn’t use. This would be a great pick, think Ian Clarkin but with a higher upside.
Rankings: MLB 12th, Keith Law 12th.
Baseball America has a completely different take. Wentz is off the board when the Yankees picked. So in BA’s scenario the Yankees select Jordan Sheffield. This is a pick I just don’t see the Yankees making for a few reasons. One is that the Yankees will look to be cautious of players with their elbows already being cut. Another reason is Sheffield doesn’t fit their mold of a pitcher. The Yankees have a type which is a big and tall pitcher with plus stuff. Sheffield has plus stuff but is listed at 6’0″ tall which means he is probably closer to 5’11”. Sheffield has shown improved command this year but they prefer strike throwers with low walk rates also. Lots of scouts also don’t think he is a starter long term either.
Rankings: MLB 19th, Keith Law 23rd.
