John Manuel updated his mock draft at Baseball America today and changed things up a bit. Here’s a link to the full mock if you want to look at it.
Here is just the Yankees part.
Funkhouser might have pitched his way out of New York’s mix, and it’s just not the time for New York to take a high school arm, not with their highest pick since 2005. New York is in on Chris Betts, the SoCal catcher who fits the Yankees’ bat-first catcher profile. But Oppenheimer and his staff has drafted well, for the most part, with college arms, and that’s what makes the most sense for them in a muddled class.
Selection: James Kaprielian, rhp, UCLA
These teams are the most likely landing spots for injured pitchers because they have multiple picks, with the exception of the Blue Jays, who have their first pick at 29, and the Yankees, whose recent run of bad luck with injured players will take the likes of Michael Matuella, Aiken and Kolby Allard off their boards. There is some buzz on Allard and Kirby, less so on Aiken and Matuella.
30. Yankees: Cody Ponce, rhp, Cal Poly Pomona
Here are a few thoughts on BA’s mock:
- I understand where Manuel is coming from on college pitchers. Oppenheimer has done a good job of drafting them and getting them to contribute to the MLB team quickly. But Kaprielian doesn’t have the track record that pitchers in the past have. In a weaker draft class I think this would be a bad pick.
- In the mock the Yankees pass on Whitley and I don’t see that happening if he is in play at 16. New York has been in on kids in their area. They drafted Cito Culver (Horrible pick) and had Mike Trout as the top player on their board when he was drafted the year he was. I can’t see them passing up a kid who some think is in the mix in the middle of the top 10 of the draft.
- Now on the Yankees are gun shy on taking an injured player because of past issues. This should be a non-issue for them and if it is they need to relook at their process. A couple points on this. It would be gambling on a comp pick instead of a first round pick which is different. Also they have a legit first round pick already if they would go after Whitley so the whole draft class isn’t just on Aiken. The Yankees should look to go for the upside picks with extra picks because they don’t draft high. Have to take some gambles on the draft.
We are starting to get into the territory of when more mocks will be coming out. We will be putting those out as soon as possible with thoughts on who the Yankees look to be taking.
