RICHMOND, VA – Trenton Thunder starting pitcher Chance Adams tossed six hitless innings to begin the night against a hapless Richmond Flying Squirrels lineup, and the Thunder staff ultimately settled on a three-hit shutout in Saturday’s 5-0 win.
Adams entered off consecutive impressive outings, having allowed a pair of hits in his last 11.0 IP. He entered with 4.0 consecutive hitless innings under his belt, and hits the All-Star break with having not allowed a base hit over his final 10.0 innings. In five starts for the Thunder, Adams (4-0, 2.57) is holding opponents to a .137 BAA and has allowed two hits- 2 HR- over his last three starts for a .038 BAA (2-for-53).
The no-hit bid was broken up in the seventh inning by the first batter, Christian Arroyo. He doubled sharply past first base and into the rightfield corner off Tyler Jones out of the bullpen. Jones recorded 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out six in the effort. After the bases were loaded with one out in the ninth, Jonathan Holder entered with the tying run in the on-deck circle for a save to preserve the 5-0 lead.
The offense came in spurts and was aided by three total errors in the game for Richmond. The Thunder used an error by C.J. Hinojosa in the fourth inning to score a run and set the table for a two-run single with two outs from Dan Fiorito to take a 3-0 lead. The only runs Trenton scored later in the game came in a two-run seventh inning which featured two more errors to make it 5-0.
The game snapped a streak of eight-straight where the Thunder defense had committed at least one error. The Thunder are 7.0 games out of first place in the East Division after a loss by the Reading Fightin Phils and are 6.5 games ahead of the Hartford Yard Goats for the second playoff spot after Hartford split a double-header with the Portland Sea Dogs.
