After 18 innings, T-Yanks defeat Cards 7-6

After winning the four game series against the St. Lucie Mets late Thursday night, the Tampa Yankees were back at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Friday night to take on the Palm Beach Cardinals, RHP Nick Goody took the start for the T-Yanks but, it would take 18 innings and catcher Wes Wilson heading to the mound for a RBI single by Dante Bichette for a 7-6 win over the Cards.

The Cards were on the board first with a two run homerun by David Washington off of Goody in the top of the second. The T-Yanks tied the game at 2 in the fourth inning with the first run being scored by Jake Cave off a sacrifice fly by Eric Jagielo and then a RBI double by Zach Wilson to send Cito Culver home.

In the top of the 5th LHP Miguel Sulbaran (ERA 6.30) who had relieved Goody, allowed two more runs by Palm Beach for a 4-2 lead over the Yanks. Wes Wilson was able to tack on another run for the T-Yanks as they continued to trail 4-3.

But, it was the eighth inning that the T-Yanks tied the game at 5 off a 2 run double by Angelo Gumbs; his seventh of the season.

With a tied game and extra innings under way, pitching duties went to LHP Dietrich Enns (ERA 1.86) worked two innings on the mound with just 2 hits allowed. Then LHP James Pazos (ERA 4.32) worked the next two innings of no hit ball; striking out 2 batters and then RHP Phil Wetherell (ERA 0.63) took over allowing 4 hits and one run by the Cards in the top of the 12th for a 6-5 lead over the Yanks. But, the Yanks weren’t quite ready to end this just yet as Greg Bird hit a RBI double to tie the game at 6.

In the top of the 15th, catcher Wes Wilson had already played 14 innings of baseball and had 6 at-bats, took over pitching duties for the T-Yanks. Wilson earned the win for Tampa after pitching 4 innings allowing just 1hit and struck out 3.

The winning run began with Anderson Feliz reaching first on a fielding error by the Cards. Jake Cave then doubled and Feliz moved into scoring position. With bases loaded and one out, Bichette hit a single on a fly ball to right to end this marathon of a game and give the Yanks the win.

The Tampa Yankees will take on the Palm Beach Cardinals in the second game of the series on Saturday night at 6:00pm; LHP Conner Kendrick (ERA 4.66, 0-1) will start for the Yanks.
