Albert Abreu Exits With Bicep Injury; Whitlock Opts For Surgery

Albert Abreu (Robert M. Pimpsner)

TRENTON – Yankees highly regarded pitching prospect Albert Abreu retired just one batter and failed to complete the first inning after leaving with an apparent right bicep injury at the 20 pitch mark during his start against Akron on Tuesday night at ARM & HAMMER.

“It sounded like right bicep, soreness, tight issue,” said Thunder Manager Pat Osborn. “It wasn’t elbow, it wasn’t shoulder. It sounded like the bicep, so that is encouraging in itself.”

Osborn added, “He will go see the doctor tomorrow and probably get an MRI just to make sure that we know exactly what is going on.”

Prior to his start on Tuesday night, Abreu had allowed just two earned runs over his previous two starts spanning 13 innings of work and appeared to have turned a corner in what has been an up-and-down season in the Eastern League.

“I feel bad for Albert because I think he was really turning a corner,” Osborn said. “He was putting together some good starts; he is growing as a pitcher. That is why he is here; to get better and to improve, and hopefully this is just a subtle setback, but you lose that momentum that he was building.

As if the injury to Abreu was not a bad enough blow to the Thunder rotation, Osborn also revealed on Tuesday night that right hander Garrett Whitlock has opted to have elbow surgery. The 23-year old was set to start against Reading on July 11 when he was scratched just minutes before scheduled first pitch after feeling discomfort during his pre-game warmup. Whitlock was 3-3 with a 3.07 ERA in 14 starts during his first season in the upper levels.
