Andujar Homers, but Thunder Drop Series Opener

TRENTON, NJ – Miguel Andujar hit his first Double-A home run, but, it was Reading starter Tyler Viza who stole the show on Thursday night as the Reading Fightin Phils took home a series opening victory, 4-2.

In front of 6,902 fans at ARM & HAMMER Park, the Thunder offense got a quick start against Viza with a lead-off single from Tyler Wade. After Dustin Fowler lined out, Andujar stepped up and slugged a two-run home run off the outfield billboards in left field for an early 2-0 lead for the Thunder.

Reading responded with three runs of their own in the top of the second inning against Ronald Herrera. Jake Fox led off the inning with a solo home run and after Harold Martinez and Osmel Aguila both reached, KC Serna tied the game with a run-scoring single. Andrew Pullin followed Serna with an RBI groundout to take a 3-2 lead for the visitors.

The one-run lead was all that Viza needed as he retired 23 straight batters following Andujar’s home run. The right-hander struck out seven and threw just 93 pitches across his eight innings of work on Thursday night.

Travis Hissong delivered four scoreless innings of relief following four frames from Herrera. Reading earned their fourth run in the top of the ninth thanks to an RBI groundout from Jorge Alfaro off of Cale Coshow.

Tyler Wade extended his on-base streak to seven games with his first inning single. Dustin Fowler accounted for the lone Thunder baserunner after the first inning with a two-out single in the ninth inning.

Your Thunder continue their series with Reading on Friday night at 7pm. RHP Vicente Campos will start for the Thunder, RHP Mark Leiter Jr. will go for the Fightin Phils. The first 2,000 fans, ages 14 and up, will receive Greg Bird Bobbleheads, presented by Hyundai, on Friday night. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
