Baby Bombers In The Show

Gary Sanchez with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Cheryl Pursell)

Game #3

Opponent: At Tampa Bay Rays

Result: 4-1 loss

2017 Record: 1-2

Game Summary: The Tampa Bay Rays claimed the opening series from the Yankees after besting New York by a score of 4-1 on Wednesday night. The Yankee bats were held to a lone run that was provided by a Jacoby Ellsbury solo shot in the top of the second inning. Michael Pineda struggled greatly, only lasting three and two thirds innings. Big Mike’s struggles with two strikes and two outs have seemed to carry over to this season, which is not a good sign of things to come. He also had another mental lapse, allowing Derek Norris to steal second base in the bottom of the second inning. The Rays immediately took advantage as Norris came around to score just a couple of pitches later on a Corey Dickerson single to right field.

Gary Sanchez – The Kraken got his first hit of the season, going 1-4 in the contest. Sanchez is now hitting .071 on the young season.

Greg Bird – Bird took an 0-4 in last night’s loss. He is now hitting .083 to begin the 2017 campaign.

Aaron Judge – Judge went 0-4 with a strikeout. His batting average is .167, slightly better than Bird’s and Sanchez’s averages.

Up Next: After a scheduled off day on Thursday, the Yankees head to Baltimore for three games to finish up a six-game road trip to open the 2017 season. On Friday, Luis Severino is scheduled to face off against Ubaldo Jimenez with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
