Chris Crawford is the new draft guy over at Baseball Prospectus (BP) and he is in the know. Chris used to write for his own site doing draft stuff plus wrote with Keith Law at ESPN on draft prospects. He now can do this full time at BP and is a good resource. This is the first mock draft that BP has done in awhile as the previous prospect team was more focus on guys after they signed.
Here’s a link to the full mock. You need to have a subscription to read the whole thing.
Here is the Yankees part.
- New York Yankees– Mike Nikorak, RHP, Stroudsburg HS (Penn.): The Yankees haven’t had this high of selection in ten years, and also possess the fifth-highest draft allocation of any team this year. With those kind of funds, it wouldn’t be a huge upset to see a Matuella or Brady Aiken go here, but I think they take the best prep pitcher left in Nikorak, a right-hander who can get up to 97 with an above-average breaking-ball
This is the type of pick the Yankees should be making. In MLB’s taking Betts would be a good pick but also Nikorak is gone. I believe the Yankees should go all arm here as the system is lacking some elite mound guys. Also because Nikorak is from the northeast he also had fewer miles on the arm which means more bullets. I think any time you can get a guy with a good delivery who can flash two above average MLB pitches you should grab him which is what this pick might be.
