Today the Yankees announced that Greg Bird will have surgery to remove a bone spur in the same foot that limited him to just 147 at-bats last season. Bird had been having a pedestrian spring before being scratched from Friday’s Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox.
The team announced that Bird is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with recovery and a rehab. With Bird heading to the shelf, this opens the door for Tyler Austin who has been notified that he’s made the team.
While the news deals a blow to the Yankees lineup the team has a strong contingency plan in place within the organization. Neil Walker looks to get more playing time at the spot while Tyler Austin will most likely get the majority of at-bats against lefties.
