Fielder will be signing pre-game autographs and throw out the first pitch to kick off the 2018 Staten Island Yankees season.

“The Staten Island Yankees enjoy a partnership with the New York Yankees, and we’re excited to welcome Cecil Fielder to Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George for our home opener,” said President Will Smith. “Cecil was a huge part of the 1996 World Series Championship and cemented his status in Yankee history that October. It’s a treat for our fans and will elevate the party here on Opening Day.”

Traded to the New York Yankees from the Detroit Tigers on July 31, 1996, Fielder became a key component to the New York Yankees World Series Championship. Fielder had four hits in 12 at-bats with four RBI and a home run in the Yankees 3-1 American League Division Series victory over the Texas Rangers. When the team went on to face the Orioles, Fielder managed only three hits in 22 plate appearances, but walked four times and hit two home runs for a total of eight RBI, including a decisive three-run home run in Game Five off Scott Erickson.

He hit .391 against the Atlanta Braves in the World Series and helped create a key run late in Game Three to secure New York’s first win of the series. Down 6-0 in Game Four, Fielder put the Yankees on the board with two on and no outs, which helped the team later tie the game and win in extra innings. New York went on to win Game Five on Fielder’s go-ahead double that scored an unearned run and won the championship in Game Six.
