Today, we continue our Coach’s Insight series here at Pinstriped Prospects by talking about the New York Yankees 1st round pick in this year’s draft, catcher Austin Wells from the University of Arizona. Wells was selected with the 28th pick and was well-known for being one of the best power bats in this year’s class.
To talk more about Austin Wells, I had the pleasure of speaking with the head coach at Arizona, Jay Johnson. Johnson has been the head coach in Tucson since 2015. In this interview, you will hear more from Johnson about how Wells has improved behind the plate, his approach in the batter’s box, and much more:
Ricky: When you first recruited Austin, what impressed you the most about him?
Coach Johnson: I just think he’s really complete. I mean, he’s a complete person. First off, great competitor, high level character guy, real mature for his age. So, given that we believed his tools were good enough, he is one of the best hitters I’ve ever coached. In terms of hitting ability, power, plate discipline, all those things. He had good arm strength in high school. I felt like those tools would show up because the person of who he is is really solid.
