Throughout the month of September, we have hosted various polls on Pinstriped Prospects so that our readers may help us name the top players throughout the system during the 2018 season. The fans have spoken and named right-handed pitcher Harold Cortijo the 2018 recipient of the Pinstriped Prospects Staten Island Yankees Player of the Year award.
Cortijo, 20, was the most consistent start for Staten Island throughout the entire season. He went 2-1 with a 2.63 ERA in 10 games, nine starts, and struck out 60 batters in 51 1/3 innings of work.
During the 2018 season, he struck out 10 or more batters twice. The first time on August 8 when he struck out 11 Lowell Spinners but took the loss. The second time came on August 28 when he struck out 10 of the Hudson Valley Renegades batters.
Cortijo’s best month was in July when he went 3-0 with a 1.33 ERA in four games, three starts, and striking out 15 batters in 20 1/3 innings of work.
Without a doubt, his performance has gone under the radar being on a pitching staff that at times had Nolan Martinez, Roansy Contreras, Matt Sauer, and Clarke Schmidt.
