The Yankees did pretty well first day of the draft. Blake Rutherford was a guy I didn’t profile because I never thought he would get to the Yankees. There is a Vine going around showing his reaction to being drafted by the Yankees. Family had Yankee jerseys on and there was a Yankee flag. Immediately I’m sure that some fans remember Gerrit Cole who was a Yankee fan who spurred the Yankees for UCLA. I assume the Yankees know Rutherford’s price tag and were fine with taking him. I think Damon won’t be burned again and would have definitely made sure Rutherford is signed.
I say that because their 2nd selection was a good prospect but one who won’t get full slot so some money is being moved to Rutherford. Nick Solak is a gamer who has some tools but isn’t worth full slot. Solak reminds me of Dustin Pederioa. I’m not saying he will be that good but I think Solak is a high floor player and I wouldn’t be shocked if he rakes in the minors.
Overall the first day of the draft is going to be about Rutherford. He will probably get an extra $500k which a good amount will come from Solak’s pick if not all of it. Solak probably would go in the 4th round to 6th round. 4th round money would be around $400k. If they give him $500k it would save them $500k also which should get Rutherford signed. If that is the case they should be able to save enough with other picks to be able to go after a tough sign in rounds 3 through 10.
