Dominican Speedster, Diaz, Called Up to Charleston

Yankees Make a Pair of Outfield Roster Moves as Jackson is placed on the DL

CHARLESTON, SC – The New York Yankees have announced that OF Cesar Diaz has been called up to Class A Charleston from extended spring training. In a corresponding move, OF Jhalan Jackson has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with a lower body injury.

Diaz, 23, joins the first-place RiverDogs in the stretch run for the first half title after appearing in four games with the Tampa Yankees in High-A this season, and going 2-for-12 at the plate with two RBIs from May 9-15 after a call up from extended spring training.

The native of Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic spent last season in the Gulf Coast League, where he hit an impressive .307/.441/.491 with one home run and 11 RBIs. The switch-hitting outfielder also led the GCL in triples (6) and stolen bases (27), despite just playing in 36 games.

Originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in August of 2013, Diaz debuted in the Dominican Summer League in 2014, where he got off to a roaring start to his pro career, hitting .305 with two home runs and 35 RBIs and impressing enough to get the call up to the GCL. In his stateside debut, Diaz went 11-for-27 (.407) in 10 games for the GCL Yanks to finish out his rookie year.

The 5’10, 165 pound outfielder has shown impressive plate discipline throughout his career, drawing 67 walks to 29 strikeouts in 93 career minor league games. He has stolen 40 bases while being caught just 12 times for a 77 percent success rate.

Diaz joins the RiverDogs (31-21) who stand in first-place in the Southern Division of the South Atlantic League with a four game lead on Columbia and 17 games to play in the first half. Charleston continues a three-game homestand facing the Kannapolis Intimidators on Friday night at 7:05pm.

Ticket information for the RiverDogs’ homestand can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com. Those that can’t make it to the park can follow every pitch of the RiverDogs season on WTMA 1250 AM and streaming online at riverdogs.com.
