Mike Amditis is a high school catcher who currently plays at Boca Raton Community High. Coming into the year Baseball America rates him as the 67th best catcher in the high school class. Last year Amditis played in the Under Armour game at Wrigley field and hit a grand slam.
College Committment: Currently Amditis is committed to play at top Miami University. Miami gets a fair amount of good players who come to their school. While it isn’t a Florida or Vanderbilt commitment it will be a tough commitment to break.
Upcoming year: Because of an injury that just happened Amditis won’t be playing his senior year of high school. He had labrum surgery on his shoulder. While it is a year long recovery time Amditis will be able to resume baseball activities within 4-5 months. That won’t give teams a chance to look at him but will give him a chance to go and do some activities at fall instructs.
Draft Stock: I believe this injury will hurt Amditis draft stock for two reasons. One is he isn’t a top guy like Kolby Allard was last year. He was taken in the first round because he was a first round talent. Right now Amditis is more of a third to fourth round talent. With teams not getting a good sense on him it will be touch to get a read on him. Number two is his commitment to Miami. Miami gets a good amount of players on campus and normally it takes good money to get them to break their commitment to them. With not being able to play that might be hard.
Now with all that being said I could see the Yankees going after Amditis if he falls in the draft and they have some extra money. They did that with Drew Finley last year. Amditis has a few traits the Yankees now highly value in catchers. He is a good defensive catcher with a recorded pop time of 1.87 seconds which is very good. Power also is what his bat is known for. So keep Amditis in mind on draft day. He could be a sleeper pick the Yankees take.
