POSITION: OF
HEIGHT/WEIGHT6’2″/180
THROWS: Right
BATS: Right
COLLEGE: Committed to Alabama
HS: Mcgill-Toolen Catholic
HOMETOWN: Theodore, AL USA

Background:

Bubba Thompson is the best two-sport athlete in this draft, as he was a very high school quarterback. Despite offers from several Division 1 programs, and an opportunity to play both sports at Auburn, he’s elected to focus on just baseball and is committed to Alabama.

Scouting Report:

As a baseball player, Thompson is known as a potential five-tool player and is ranked as one of the best high school athletes in the entire draft. Perfect Game ranked him as the best prep athlete, while Baseball America had him ranked 5th. He has plus speed, and a plus arm, so there is no doubt that he can become a great center fielder. He still has to work on route efficiency, but overall, he can make highlight reel catches in center field.

As a hitter, he is a bit rawer, but not as raw as you’d expect from a such a prominent two-sport athlete. Thompson has quick bat speed and bat-to-ball skills. He’s also shown good power this spring. Overall, he looks a future five-tool player, but he still has a lot to prove on offense, including how much plate discipline and pitch recognition he processes. This season struck-out 18 times and had 15 walks. With that said he hasn’t solely focused on baseball until now, and it’s believed he will eventually develop an at-least average tool.

Overview:

Thompson is ranked as the 18th best prospect by BA, the 24th by MLB.com, and Keith Law ranks him 25th. All three publications projected him to be drafted at pick 23 in their latest mock draft. Apparently, the Dodgers are very high on Thompson. The Yankees have also been linked to Thompson, and BA mock draft 3.0 had the selecting at pick 16. Thompson turns 19-years-old a couple of days before the draft, but that’s not expected to affect his stock, and the Yankees recently drafted a 19-year-old prep player in Blake Rutherford, so it probably won’t change their decision.
