Finley is a good size kid as he is 6’3″ 200 pound right handed pitcher from Rancho Bernardo California. He is the son David Finley who is an executive with the Dodgers. Born July 10th 1996 so he will be 19 next year when he fully starts his professional career.
Stuff:
Fastball right now is sitting int he low 90’s and appears that there might be more in the tank if the Yankees can add a little weight on to his frame as he looks as if he could add some pounds.
Curveball: Looks very good with some good twelve to six action. It comes in around 75 mph so it’s a big difference in speed and eye level.
Changeup: He has one but hasn’t had to use one which is a common theme for all high school pitchers.
Rankings:
Baseball America: 60th. MLB: 56th. FG: 89th.
My take: I prefer high school pitchers because they typically are a blank slate to do with what you want. He also has the bloodlines to be a good player. This is a kid who will probably be very coachable and won’t be complaining because he has grown up around the game. I would have liked some other guys here but the Yankees were in on Finley for awhile from chatter and loved everything about him. He also is a southern California kid which is the Yankees bread and butter place.
