TRENTON, N.J. – Dietrich Enns threw 5.2 no-hit innings and struck out a career-high 11 batters in a 2-0 victory for the Thunder over the visiting Akron RubberDucks on Friday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Enns began his night by striking out five of the first six batters he faced and allowed just one walk before the sixth inning. Clint Frazier broke up the no-hit bid with a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third. After a walk to Bradley Zimmer to load the bases, Enns got Nellie Rodriguez to fly out and end the threat.
The Thunder got the only offense that Enns needed in the second inning when Jake Cave drove in Cito Culver and Tyler Wade with a triple to right-center. Cave (2-for-4) accounted for both hits for the Thunder offense, a group that drew six walks off of Akron’s starter; Dace Kime.
Jonathan Holder and Mark Montgomery followed Enns’ effort with three innings of shutout relief. They combined to strike out six, giving the Thunder a season-best 17 strikeouts as a staff.
The pitching staff also combined to hold Akron to just one hit, the first time since June 11, 2015 when the staff held the Erie Seawolves to just one hit in a 6-0 victory.
