ALTOONA, PA – The Trenton Thunder offense outhit the Altoona Curve Wednesday morning, but five errors in the field was the difference in a 5-4 loss at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Through four innings, the Thunder committed five errors leading to a 3-1 lead against Jordan Montgomery. The Thunder lefty suffered his first loss of his Double-A career after getting through 4.0 innings with three runs allowed, but just one run was earned. Montgomery lowered his season ERA to 2.61 with the outing, and has now struck out 15 batters in 9.0 innings over his last two outings.
Trailing 3-1 entering the top of the 5th inning, the Thunder offense received a jolt from centerfielder, Dustin Fowler. Fowler already had a double in the game when he came to bat in the 5th inning with Tyler Wade aboard. Against Altoona starting pitcher Clay Holmes he launched a triple over the head of center fielder Hector Ramirez to bring Trenton back to within a run.
Altoona scored twice in the bottom of the 5th to extend the lead to its largest of the day at 5-2. However, in the top of the 6th the Thunder loaded the bases with one out when Cito Culver doubled home a pair of runs to bring the Thunder within a run, 5-4. Trenton had the tying run at third in Juan Silva with Culver representing the potential go-ahead run when lefty reliever Josh Smith fanned Tyler Wade and Fowler to preserve the lead.
The two outs to end the 6th inning started a stretch to end the game where Altoona pitching retired 14-of-15 batters to close out the ballgame.
