Familiar Names Return to Lead Yankees Rookie Level Teams

With minor league spring training opening in just a few days, Yankees minor league prospects will have several familiar faces as coaches at the rookie levels.

GCL Yankees West

For the Gulf Coast League Yankees West, Nick Ortiz will take over the reigns after managing the Pulaski Yankees in 2018.  Ortiz is entering his fourth season with the Yankees organization and his third as a manager.  He is joined by pitching coach Justin Pope, Hitting Coach Jake Hirst, Defensive Coach Lino Diaz, Defensive Coach Hector Rabago, Athletic Trainer AJ Cano and Strength and Conditioning Coach James Gonzalez.

Pope is entering his tenth season as a coach for the Yankees and spent his last three seasons as pitching coach for the Charleston RiverDogs, this will be the first time he serves as a pitching coach for the GCL Yankees West.  Jake Hirst is making his professional coaching debut as the hitting coach in 2018 after being the assistant coach at Augustana College.  Defensive Coach Lino Diaz joins the GCL Yankees after spending the 2018 season as the manager of the Staten Island6 Yankees. Hector Rabago is returning to the GCL Yankees as a defensive coach and is entering his sixth overall season as a coach in the system.

GCL Yankees East

The GCL Yankees East will have a new manager in former player Dan Fiorito.  Fiorito is making his managerial debut after being the defensive coach for the Charleston RiverDogs in 2018.  He made his professional coaching debut in 2017 with the Pulaski Yankees.  He will be joined by Gabriel Tatis as pitching coach, Antonio Pacheco and Rainiero Coa as defensive coaches, Jordan Gosztola as athletic trainer and Ty Hill as the strength and conditioning coach.  The hitting coach position is still open.

Tatis is entering his sixth season with the Yankees organization, spending his last five in the Dominican Summer League as a pitching coach.  Defensive coach Antonio Pacheco is entering his fifth season in the organization and his fourth in the gulf coast league.  Coa spent the last three seasons as a coach in the DSL as both a catching coach and a defensive coach.  This will be his first season in the GCL as a coach.

DSL Yankees

The DSL Yankees have a familiar face at the helm as Caonabo Cosme is returning as manager for them.  He will be joined by pitching coach Edwin Moreno, hitting coach Aaron Leanhardt, and defensive coaches Carlos Mota and Victor Rey.

This year the Yankees will be fielding a parallel program in the Dominican Republic.  Leading the parallel program will be manager Oscar Escobar.  This is his second year in the position.  He is joined by former MLB pitcher Edwar Ramirez who will serve as a pitching coach, Selwyn Langaigne who will be the hitting coach.  Former Yankee’s minor leaguers Carlos Vidal and Brian Reyes will serve as defensive coaches.

Edwin Beard will be a hitting coach down in the DR.
