Fireflies Drop Dogs 5-0

The Columbia Fireflies blanked the Charleston RiverDogs 5-0 in the series opener at Joe Riley Park Tuesday night.

Christian Morris took the hill for the Dogs and labored through his five innings on the mound struggling with his command while allowing two runs on six hits. Dash Winningham put the first run on the board in the second inning with a towering home run that sailed over the right field wall. The second run was unearned and scored after Kyle Holder‘s throw hit Emmanuel Zabala who was tagging to third on a fly out to right. After the ball skipped by Mandy Alvarez, Zabala scampered home for a 2-0 Fireflies lead.

Kevin Canelon started the game for Columbia and kept the Dogs in check all night long allowing only two hits while striking out five. He moved his record to 6-10 on the season bringing down his ERA to 3.32 on the season. Nicco Blank finished the game giving up two hits in two innings of work. Ricardo Ferreira collected three hits, all singles, for the RiverDogs in the second, fifth and eighth. Chris Gittens added another single in the ninth.

Dillon Tate came in to relieve in the sixth for Morris and retired the Fireflies despite giving up two hits. In the seventh, he allowed three runs, two of them earned.

The trouble started when J.C. Rodriguez struck out to start the inning, but reached on a passed ball by Audie Afenir. After retiring Pat Mazeika with a pop up to left, Eudor Garcia singled and then Winningham cracked a single to center scoring Rodriguez for Columbia’s third run. Luis Ortega then ripped a triple that leftfielder Cesar Diaz in left center could not catch up to. Garcia and Winningham both scored extending the lead to 5-0.

The RiverDogs lead the season series 8-7 and the two teams will resume their series Wednesday evening at 7 PM at The Joe.
