Moosic, PA – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders scored six early runs and cruised past the Rochester Red Wings 9-2 on Thursday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders (35-27) won their fourth straight, and ninth in 10 games. The club leads the Red Wings (31-28) by 2.5 games in the International League North Division.
Starter Kyle Davies (5-4) earned his fifth win by limiting the Red Wings to two runs on six hits over 6.1 frames. The win tied him for the team lead in victories. Davies struck out three and yielded one walk. Tyler Duffey (0-4) suffered his fourth straight defeat in as many starts after allowing seven runs on nine hits, both season worsts.
SWB built a 2-0 advantage in the first inning on a run-producing single by Rob Refsnyder and a sacrifice fly to right by Austin Romine. Jonathan Galvez made hit 3-0 on a sacrifice fly to left in the second inning before Kyle Roller unloaded a bases-loaded double. The two-bagger plated three for a 6-0 lead.
Rochester tallied a run in the fourth, but the RailRiders got it back on thanks to single by Ramon Flores that scored Nick Noonan.
Leading 7-2 in the eighth, SWB put the game away with a pair of runs. Cole Figueroa doubled home Rob Segedin and Galvez scored from third when center fielder Danny Ortiz missed a catch in the right-center gap.
Caleb Cotham returned from a stint on the disabled list to fire a scoreless ninth inning. He surrendered a single and struck out the final batter.
Five RailRiders finished with multiple hits. Figueroa led the group with three knocks, including two doubles.
The RailRiders continue their weekend homestand with the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins) on Friday night at PNC Field. Southpaw Jose De Paula (1-0, 075) makes his third start for SWB and rematches with right-hander Lester Oliveros (2-1, 2.67). The 7:05 p.m. first pitch will feature “What If?” Night and Friday Fireworks. Saturday’s game features a Derek Jeter bobblehead giveaway, presented by Allied Services.
