TRENTON, NJ – Billy Fleming doubled twice and Eddy Rodriguez hit a three-run home run to lead the Thunder to a 7-1 victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Monday afternoon at ARM & HAMMER Park.
With the win, the Thunder take three of four from the Flying Squirrels and enter the All-Star break with the league’s second-best record.
The Thunder scored six times over the first three innings against Richmond starter Adalberto Mejia (L, 4-1). Ali Castillo drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the first to finish a two-run inning off of Mejia. With two out and a runner on first in the third inning, Mejia walked Mark Payton and surrendered an RBI single to Cito Culver to take a 3-0 lead for the Thunder.
Rodriguez then crushed a three-run home run over the wall in left field to take a 6-0 lead for the Thunder.
The advantage was more than enough for starter Caleb Smith (W, 8-4) who allowed just four baserunners and struck out three over six shutout innings. Smith turned in the fifth straight quality start for the Thunder.
Billy Fleming, making his Double-A debut, went 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of doubles. Fleming, the Council Rock South product, also scored a run on Monday afternoon.
Your Thunder will have two days off for the All-Star break on Tuesday and Wednesday and return to action on Thursday July 16 at Binghamton. The Thunder return home for a seven-game homestand on Thursday July 23 at 7:00pm. Tickets can be ordered online at Trentonthunder.com/tickets or by phone at 609-394-3300.
