Four Early Runs Provide Spark for RiverDogs

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Isaias Tejeda got the Charleston RiverDogs on the board with a two-run home run in the first inning and the R’Dogs never looked back Sunday afternoon, beating the West Virginia Power 6-5 for their second straight victory at Appalachian Power Park.

The RiverDogs (19-11) added a run in each of the following two innings as well. Gosuke Katoh hit a sacrifice fly to center in the second and Jorge Mateo scored on an infield single by Devyn Bolasky in the third.

West Virginia (16-13) did not score until the fifth inning when Michael Suchy hit an RBI single to right to cut Charleston’s lead to 4-1. But the RiverDogs responded quickly with two runs in the top of the sixth on an infield single by Jorge Mateo and errors by second baseman Pablo Reyes and shortstop Trace Tam Sing.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kawika Emsley-Pai hit a solo home run and Cole Tucker hit an RBI single to center to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Power put runners in scoring position in each of the last three innings and gave the RiverDogs a scare in the ninth.

Tam Sing and Elvis Escobar hit RBI singles, but Emsley-Pai lined out to second baseman Angel Aguilar who stepped on the bag at second for an unassisted, inning-ending double play.

Yoel Espinal (2-0) earned the win in relief of Jordan Montgomery, who only lasted an inning in a short start. Colten Brewer (0-1) took the loss in his first appearance since June 2013. Joe Harvey gave up the two runs to West Virginia in the ninth but got out of the jam to pick up his sixth save of the season.
