Gamel Drives In 2 in Caracas Victory

Ben Gamel went 2-for-5 with a run scored and 2 RBIs to raise his Venezuelan Winter League average to .261 as Leones del Caracas was victorious over Tiburones de La Guaira after a ninth inning rally.  Yankees prospect Mark Montgomery also got into the game but was touched for 3 runs.

Gamel got the start in centerfield for Caracas, batting seventh in the order.  His first hit came in the top of the second inning with 1-out on the board Ben lined a single to right field to put two men on base.  After two consecutive singles he ended up being stranded at third when the inning ended.  Ben struck out and flew out sharply to center in his next two bats before getting a ground out in his fourth at bat of the night to end the eighth.

Then in the top of the ninth inning Caracas came alive and plated 7 runs to take the lead.  Gamel earned 2 RBIs when he hit a sharp line drive to left field that cleared the bases and got him safely to second with a double.  The next batter then lined a single to center to bring Ben home and plate the seventh run of the inning.

New York Yankees prospect Mark Montgomery came in to finish out the game in the ninth inning after Caracas took the lead.  He would face a lineup that featured several former Yankees including Reegie Corona who he walked.  He then went on to walk Cesar Suarez before allowing a double to Jose Martinez.  With that he was touched for 2 runs and taken out of the game responsible for Martinez who then came home on a single by former Yankees farm hand Ronnier Mustelier.  In all he did not record an out and allowed 3 earned runs to score.

Elsewhere in the Venezuelan Winter League, Yankees minor leaguers Ali Castillo and Francisco Arcia had a big game for Aguilas del Zulia.  Castillo batted leadoff and played second, going 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and a double while catcher Francisco Arcia went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored to raise his average to .455 this winter.  They faced off against Tigres de Aragua which featured Teodoro Martinez who went 1-for3 and playing left field.
