While the GCL Yankees 1 were rained out of a double header today, GCL Yankees 2 needed twelve innings to defeat the GCL Astros 6-5 on the road.
The Yankees got hits from ten different players, highlighted by Frank Frias’ three hits to go along with two walks. Frias, 20, is now hitting .316 with an on base percentage of .381. He only has seven extra-base hits and hasn’t homered, but he has hit consistently all season in his first summer stateside.
The Yankees also got a homer from Allen Valerio, but he left the game in the third inning for an unknown reason. Valerio, like Frias, is in his first GCL season, and he could be an interesting prospect at third base. He has steadily produced, with a .298/.399/.489 line so far, and hopefully he won’t miss much time.
Following a rough outing last time out, Melvin Morla had a good start for the Yankees today, throwing five one-hit innings with eight strikeouts. Tied after nine, the Yankees took the lead scoring a run in the tenth inning, only to have Felix Santiago give the lead back by allowing a run in the bottom half. He stuck around to get the win by pitching two strong innings in the eleventh and twelfth.
