MLB Network released their list of top-10 third basemen on Wednesday, and it includes a New York Yankee. MLB Network listed Yankees’ third basemen, Gio Urshela as the no. 9 overall third basemen in baseball.
Urshela was traded to the Yankees in 2018 and has quickly become a fan favorite in New York. Since joining the Yankees he has hit .310/.358/.523 in 175 games in pinstripes. He was a gold-glove finalist in 2020 playing great defense on the third base corner of the infield and making Derek Jeter-like throws across the diamond.
In 2019, Urshela had a .355 average, hitting 34 doubles, 21 home runs and knocking in 74 RBI’s. He also had 73 runs scored. Urshela had a .355 OBP, .534 SLG, and a .899 OPS. He ranked 16th in the American League in doubles..
In the COVID—19 shortened 2020 season, Urshela was up and down at the plate. He had a .298 average, .368 OBP, .490 SLG, and a .858 SLG. He hit 11 doubles, six home runs, and knocked in 30 RBI’s, along with 24 runs scored.
One characteristic that always stands out about Urshela is his ability to stay positive and have fun. He also has the ability to come up clutch and produce timely, quality at bats and hits when he needs to.
A great example of this was the game that led the Yankees to clinch a spot in the 2020 ALDS. Urshela had a phenomenal game and was quoted stating, “That was the best game I ever played in my life… The team always stayed positive, focused, everybody had the same goal. We made it.”
Since joining the Yankees, Urshela has made a name for himself amidst the discussion of top infielders in the league and MLB Network listing him as their No. 9 overall third basemen in the MLB is just more proof of that.
