Torres named top shortstop prospect by MLB Pipeline

In what should come as no surprise to anybody, New York Yankees top prospect Gleyber Torres was named the top shortstop prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline this morning. It is the second straight year that Torres tops the site’s rankings at that position.

As MLB Pipeline did their rankings, they ranked Torres as having one of the best hit tools (70), one of the best arms (60), and the highest floor of any of the other shortstop prospects. Among those other shortstops was former Yankees prospect Jorge Mateo (ninth), who is now with the Oakland Athletics after the Sonny Gray trade.

Earlier in the week, Torres was ranked as the sixth-best prospect by Baseball America, but he is still the second highest rated infielder.

While Torres’ 2017 season got halted due to Tommy John surgery on his non-throwing elbow in June, he still put up some good numbers. In 55 games with Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre, the 21-year-old had a slash line of .287/.383/.480 with seven home runs, 34 RBI’s, and 14 doubles.

It is interesting that Torres ranks number one at shortstop because that is not likely going to be the position he plays when he makes his major league debut. With Didi Gregorius set as the shortstop, Torres is one of the leading candidates to be the Opening Day second baseman.

Ever since the Yankees acquired Torres from the Cubs in the Aroldis Chapman trade in July 2015, he has made an instant impact on the organization with his ability to get on-base, play multiple positions in the field, and his ability to hit for extra bases.

The question that the Yankees will have to answer this spring is whether or not they believe Torres is ready to start in the big leagues. He is on the 40-man roster, but New York could decide to take the cautious approach and continue to have him play every day in the International League.

Whenever that big league debut comes, the sky is the limit for Torres as Yankees fans hope he joins the core of young stars already with the Bronx Bombers to help bring the organization championship success.
