BOWIE, MD – The Trenton Thunder scored the first run of the game Wednesday night, but the Bowie Baysox rattled off the final seven runs unanswered in a 7-1 victory at Prince George’s Stadium.
Trenton staked Ronald Herrera to a lead before he threw a pitch in the bottom of the first inning. However, the first time through the Baysox batting order, Bowie had jumped out for five runs off him.
The Thunder righty had not started since June 19 against the Binghamton Mets and was activated off the disabled list prior to the ballgame. He allowed four runs in the first inning, and then Glynn Davis homered on the first pitch of the second inning to make it 5-1.
Herrera threw 58 pitches in 4.0 innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out five. His record dropped to 6-5 and season ERA climbed to 4.30.
Offensively, the game began well for Trenton with Tyler Wade reaching second base on a two-base throwing error by Bowie starting pitcher John Means to begin the night. After a deep flyout to centerfield by Dustin Fowler, Miguel Andujar plated Wade for a 1-0 lead.
The run came home on a close play at the plate when Andujar popped a fly to shallow right field, and a backpedaling second baseman, Steve Wilkerson, made the catch and delivered a high throw to the plate allowing Wade to slide under the tag.
On a night where the Thunder had just six hits, they stranded 12 men—the second most this season, two nights after stranding 13 men in Monday’s victory. Lane Adams reached base three times, finishing 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base.
The loss is a second straight for Trenton, for the first time since losing two in-a-row at Erie June 11-12. Despite the loss Wednesday, the Thunder remain 8.0 games in back of first place in the East Division behind the Reading Fightin Phils and 6.0 games ahead of the Hartford Yard Goats for second place in the division. Both teams lost as well Wednesday night, keeping the East Division playoff standings as-is for another day.
The Thunder and Baysox wrap up the season series at Prince George’s Stadium Thursday night before the Thunder pile on the bus and head to Richmond, Vir. for the first time this season. LHP Jordan Montgomery (7-3, 2.69) takes the ball for Trenton against Bowie RHP Brandon Barker (4-2, 3.18).
