It’s That Man Gamel Again

MOOSIC, Pa. – A wild Monday night at PNC Field finished in exhilarating fashion as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders  scored a 2-1 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Ben Gamel’s walk-off, inside-the-park home run to right. The RailRiders (65-52) earned their fifth straight win over the PawSox (44-72), a club that has lost eight straight.

The two clubs ventured into the ninth inning tied at 1-1. Caleb Cotham (2-0) made it through his second scoreless inning of relief work, catching Allen Craig looking for a frame-ending strike three. Gamel led off the final stanza and blistered a lien drive to right. Jonathan Roof attempted a sliding stop, but missed. The ball rolled to the base of the wall as Gamel raced around the bases to score the winning run.

The walk-off handed the loss to Heath Hembree (0-1). It was the first inside-the-park home run turned by the RailRiders since Rob Refsnyder came around at Lehigh Valley on June 28, 2014.

Kyle Davies authored another strong start, but left with a no decision. The right-hander fanned a season-high eight batters across seven innings of three-hit ball. Roof scored an unearned run in the sixth on a throwing error by Davies for his only blemish.

The RailRiders took a 1-0 lead against Pawtucket starter Matt Barnes in the second on a bases-loaded, sacrifice fly to center by Cole Figueroa. SWB had chances to expand the lead, but stranded nine men on base through six innings.

The RailRiders continue their four-game series with the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) at PNC Field on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Kyle Haynes (0-1, 11.42) opposes right-hander William Cuevas (0-1, 2.57). The first 1,00 fans receive a RailRiders t-shirt, presented by Norwegian Cruise Lines. For more information please call (570) 969-BALL (2255) or visit swbrailriders.com.
