Jordon Montgomery and Chad Green were set to start off their years in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Double-A Trenton. However, that was said to be open to change if weather in the North East was to be an issue for either games. That will stand true as news broke of the two making their first appearances in High-A Tampa when the season starts on Thursday night.
Montgomery pitched in six games this spring where he’d strike 17 batters out in 19 2/3 innings. Along with sporting a .97 WHIP, he moved himself up as a favorite to win the Yankees’ fifth starter position ahead of guys like Chad Green and Luis Cessa. As for Chad Green he’d pitch 12 innings with the Yankees in Spring Training, giving up two runs, totaling eight strikeouts, and carrying a 1.25 WHIP. The two will now begin their battle for the fifth spot in the rotation on the same team come Thursday’s opening game at George M. Steinbrenner Field against Chad Green’s old team, the Lakeland Flying Tigers.
With Girardi noting the Yankees would not pick a fifth starter until the half way point of April, the pair will have many more chances to win that position over. However, this is quite an interesting start to the season, where as if weather were not an issue, Montgomery would be starting for Triple-A SWB, and Green for Double-A Trenton. There is no word on how the two will be used exactly come Thursday night, but it is confirmed they will both pitch for Tampa.
