TRENTON, NJ – The Akron RubberDucks score four times in the top of the first and never looked back as they defeated the Thunder, 9-3, on Sunday afternoon in front of 4,948 fans at ARM & HAMMER Park.
After Dante Bichette Jr. committed an error in the top of the first inning, Akron’s Anthony Gallas drove in a pair of RubberDucks with a single. The visitors added two more later in the inning and forced Thunder starter Taylor Garrison to throw 38 pitches in the opening frame.
The RubberDucks added three more in the top of the third when Erik Gonzalez led off the inning with a solo home run and Bryson Myles drove in two more with a double to left-center.
Myles’ stroke gave Akron starter Mike Clevinger a 7-0 lead to work with and the hard-throwing right-hander held the Thunder offense to just one run in six innings.
The Thunder offense broke through in the seventh inning with two outs, Jake Cave was hit by a pitch by reliever Grant Sides and Aaron Judge followed with a mammoth two-run home run to the opposite field. Judge added a single in the ninth inning to record his 12th multi-hit game (of 22 played) of the season.
In the each of the last nine losses for the Thunder, an opponent has had an inning in which they’ve scored at least three runs. In their last five games, the Thunder are batting just .191 and have now dropped seven of their last nine.
Your Thunder will look to bounce back against the Erie SeaWolves (Detroit Tigers) who begin a four-game series at ARM & HAMMER Park on Monday night at 7:00pm.
It’s Star Wars night at the ballpark and characters such as Darth Vader, Storm Troopers and Clone Troopers will be in attendance and special themed jerseys will be available in the Thunder Company Store. Tickets can be ordered online at Trentonthunder.com/tickets.
