TRENTON, NJ – After a pitching duel between top pitching prospects Luis Severino and Dylan Bundy, Aaron Judge lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Cito Culver in the bottom of the 13th inning and finish off a 1-0 victory for the Thunder on Thursday night in front of 5,094 fans at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Culver walked to begin the 13th against reliever Mychal Givens and Jake Cave singled down the right field line to put runners on the corners. After Ali Castillo bounced out to first, Judge lifted a 1-0 offering to deep right to bring home the winning run.
Luis Severino, returning from a stint on the disabled list, retired the first 14 batters he faced before Michael Burgess reached on catcher’s interference. Burgess was caught stealing to finish the fifth and Severino finished his night after 62 pitches, 43 strikes.
Bowie starter Dylan Bundy allowed just two hits over four innings and matched Severino’s total with five strikeouts.
The Thunder offense left two runners on in each the seventh, eighth and eleventh innings before finally breaking through in the thirteenth.
Gary Sanchez threw out three potential base stealers in the game. Jake Cave, Judge, Eric Jagielo and Dante Bichette Jr. each recorded a pair of hits for the Thunder. Ali Castillo extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the eighth.
The victory marked the fifth walk-off win of the season for the Thunder and the bullpen fired eight shutout innings.
