Kluber and Cessa Struggle as Yankees fall to Phillies 6-2

Corey Kluber and Luis Cessa both struggled on the mound Sunday and the Yankees offense faltered as the Yankees dropped Saturday’s matchup with the Phillies 6-2 on the eve of the final spring training game of the season. Wheeler (2-2) took the winn for the Phillies, while Kluber (1-1) took the loss for the Yankees.

Kluber struggles

Corey Kluber struggled on the mound in his final spring training appearance, throwing 73 pitches, just 39 for strikes over the course of 3.1 innings pitched. Over the course of those 3.1 innings he allowed three hits, two earned runs, four walks and struck out five. His ERA through his final start of spring is 2.77.

According to David Adler of MLB, the last nine curveballs that Kluber threw were all balls. Three missed close, while the others were inside or in the dirt. The curveball is said to be Kluber’s signature pitch, so you can expect he will work on correcting his mechanics prior to his first regular season start.

The third inning is when it all unraveled for Kluber as he was inconsistent with his command, walked two batters, hit a batter, allowed two singles and a sacrifice fly before being subbed by Brooks Kriske.

Kluber finishes the spring with this final line:

13 IP, 5 R (2.77 ERA), 10 H, 7 BB, 14 K

Overall, it was a solid first spring with the Yankees for Kluber. Today’s outing was rocky, but Kluber will get back to work before his next outing when it counts for real.

Luis Cessa Gets Rocked

Luis Medina followed Cessa. He threw one inning, giving up one run on one hit, one walk and did not have any strikeouts. Medina has a 10.80 ERA through spring.

Yankees Offense Goes Down Quiet

The Yankees offense was quiet on Sunday, collecting just two runs and seven hits. Bruce, Estrada, Frazier, LaMarre, Wells, and Wade (2) each had hits on Sunday. Estrada an RBI and run scored on a ninth inning home run off of Kintzler. LaMarre’s RBI coming off a sac-fly that scored Frazier in the fifth.

That was all the offense would produce as Blue Jays out hit the Yankees 9-7 and out-scored them 6-2 to defeat the Yankees the clubs’ final matchup of spring.
