So the Yankees took Kyle Holder which was not a name that the Yankees were linked to at all in any mocks or any buzz. Most people thought that Chris Betts would have been their pick here but I think the injury to his throwing shoulder is pushing him down.
Mayo said on the broadcast that he had some scouts give a 70 on the defense. He then said he thinks that Holder will be more of a 60 defender at the big league. That is a great asset to have and something that the Yankees seem to be valuing a lot more lately.
MLB had him as the 51st best player in the draft. Kiley at Fangraphs had him at 66th. Baseball America had him at 38th.
My pick at this spot would have been Michael Matuella. As long as they thought they could sign him I would roll the dice on a player who might have been the first pick in the draft. Now there is even more injury concerns with him but the Yankees need to take chances because they don’t get multiple draft picks. Especially with their pick at 16 why not go complete upside with the pick to really hit the draft out of the park.
