Keith Law and Jim Callis both released mock drafts this week and they are interesting.
Law’s Mock: (http://espn.go.com/blog/mlb-draft/insider/post?id=2618)
Law’s mock is behind a paywall so I will only say who he commented on. He has Taylor Tremmel an outfield out of Georgia. Tremmel is a two sport athlete who was a running back for football. He won’t be playing football if he goes to college thou. He is only going on a baseball scholarship. There are lots of loud tools right now just not a lot of skills. The Yankees have taken some two sports athletes in the past. They haven’t worked out well for them thou.
Callis Mock draft: (http://m.mlb.com/news/article/179142756/aj-puk-at-no-1-in-latest-mlb-mock-draft?topicid=151437456)
Callis has the Yankees taking Jordan Sheffield. In his scenario thou all the prep pitchers the Yankees would like are gone except Wentz who he has the Blue Jays taking. But in his write up it said it would take more than the 2.25 million the Blue Jays have for their first round pick. I think if the Yankees had a chance they would go after Bentz. While they prefer college pitchers Sheffield is everything they don’t draft or target. While he has very good stuff and might eventually have 3 plus pitches he isn’t tall nor does he limit walks. Both of those things all Yankee pitchers who they have drafted or traded for share that quality.
Kaprielian in his two years as a starter at UCLA never walked more than 3 batters per 9. Sheffield had a 6.45 bb/9 last year and 3.28 BB/9 this year. While Sheffield has struck out more batters per 9 this year Kaprielian still beats him in K/BB. Kap had 2.99 for his career at UCLA compared to Sheffield’s 2.05.
