Matt Sauer Selected as Tampa Tarpons’ Opening Night Starter

The Tampa Tarpons open their season on Tuesday night with an evening matchup against the Dunedin Blue Jays at 6:30 PM EDT. The Tarpons’ announced on Monday that it will be right-handed pitcher Matt Sauer getting the ball to open the Tarpons’ season.

Sauer was drafted by the Yankees in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft with the No. 54 overall pick out of Righetti High School in Santa Maria, CA. He spent the 2018 season with Staten Island, and the 2019 season with the Charleston River Dogs.

In 2018 with short-season Staten Island, Sauer was 3-6 with a 3.90 ERA. He threw 67 innings over the course of 13 games played. He gave up 31 runs, 29 earned runs on 60 hits and 18 walks. He struck out 45 and had a 1.16 WHIP.

In 2019 with full-season Charleston, Sauer was 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA. He threw 8.2 innings in two games played. He gave up three earned runs on six hits and six walks. He struck out eight and had a 2.08 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.

Sauer will look to start his season strong with low-A Tampa on Tuesday night.
