McBroom and Avelino Return to Trenton After Flurry of Roster Activity on Tuesday

TRENTON – In a slew of roster moves on Tuesday afternoon, first baseman Ryan McBroom and infielder Abiatal Avelino were sent down to Trenton from Triple-A Scranton. Outfielder Zack Zehner and infielder Rey Navarro were sent up to SWB while first baseman Chris Gittens was placed on the seven-day DL (retroactive to 6/18) with a left hip injury.

McBroom had begun the season with the RailRiders and spent the first two months of the season with them before being sent down to Trenton on June 1. The 26-year old first baseman spent just five games with the Thunder before going back north. Since that date on June 8, McBroom had been the hottest hitter in the SWB lineup, going 17-for-43 with three homers and 14 RBI in 10 games. While McBroom has certainly earned an everyday spot in Triple-A, the presence of Tyler Austin and the need for a first baseman in Trenton made it necessary to move him back down for the short-term.

Avelino falls in a similar boat to the one McBroom has been forced to sail in as of late. The 23-year old infielder opened the campaign in Triple-A before coming down to Trenton on May 1 to make room for Thairo Estrada. The Yankees wanted Avelino to play shortstop everyday for the Thunder instead of forcing him into a part-time role in SWB. Avelino slashed .326/.379/.512 with 5 homers and 19 RBI in 33 games before going back up on June 9. After the Yankees opted to send infielder Ronald Torreys down in favor of Clint Frazier yesterday, Avelino again was forced out so that he may get the every day reps.
