Meet the Yankees’ New Coaching Staff:

Aaron Boone has eagerly been working on his coaching staff ever since the announcement of his hire as the Yankees new manager last week. With a few solid additions mixed in with veteran staffers from previous seasons, the 2018 coaching staff should put the Yankees in a stellar position for the upcoming season.

Josh Bard, Bench Coach – Coming from the Dodgers, Bard has bounced around a few jobs within the LA organization. Most recently serving as the Dodgers’ bullpen coach the last two seasons, Bard also previously worked as both a scout and special assistant in the team’s front office. Bard and Boone were also teammates back in 2005 while both were in Cleveland. In addition to Cleveland, Bard played for the Red Sox, Padres, Nationals, and Mariners in his 10 seasons as a Major League player.

Phil Nevin, Third Base Coach – Most recently the Giants’ third base coach, Nevin will be taking his talents to the Bronx this year as the third base coach. Previously, Nevin managed the Diamondback’s Triple-A affiliate, the Reno Aces, from 2014-16. In his 12 seasons of Major League play, Nevin played with the Astros, Tigers, Angels, Padres, Rangers, Cubs, and Twins.

Reggie Willits, First Base Coach – As the organization’s minor league outfield and baserunning instructor for three years now, it isn’t a surprise Willits was promoted to the position of first base coach. Willits played with the Angels from 2006-11.

Carlos Mendoza, Infield Coach – Mendoza has hopped around minor league coaching and managerial jobs since 2009, with his most recent being the minor league infield coordinator. With the impact he’s already had on guys in the minors’ system, Boone views Mendoza as a “rising star” in the industry and is thrilled to bring him onto the coaching staff. Mendoza will also be filling the role of the only Spanish-speaking presence on the coaching staff.

Not newbies, but definitely still goodies: The Yankees have chosen to keep on staff pitching coach Larry Rothschild, bullpen coach Mike Harkey, and hitting coach Marcus Thames. When asked on his thoughts about his coaching staff, Boone simply replied, “With all my coaches, I don’t see myself as being a guy that’s going to micromanage situations.”
