Hi, what are you looking for?

Midseason Report

Keith Law had his midseason top 50 prospect list come out on the 12th.  If you hadn’t seen it here it is http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8150343/jurickson-profar-texas-rangers-new-no-1-prospect-baseball-mlb

Law had three Yankees ranked in his top 50 prospects.  Mason Williams, Gary Sanchez and Tyler Austin were the three Yankees that made Law’s list.  Per Mike Axisa of www.riveraveblues.com  Law would have had Manny Banuelos there too.

Let’s examine Law’s list.  I ran the numbers and what really stood out to me is that the average age was just slightly north of 20 years old.    Here is how Law’s list came down,

3 Catchers

1 First basemen

1 Second basemen

8 Shortstops

6 Third basemen

1 Left fielder

7 Center fielder

5 Right fielder

15 Right handed pitcher

3 Left handed pitcher

So the Yankees had one of the top three catchers, one of the top five right fielders in the game and one of the top seven center fielders in the league.   Williams was actually the third best CF prospect in the game right now.   Sanchez was the 2nd best catcher in the game right now.  Austin was the fifth best RF prospect right now.

I would recommend everyone to go to the link and read the scouting blurb that Law put on the Yankee players.   From chats and talking to Keith in person he is a big Austin fan.  I am hoping that Austin can get back out there and continue to dominate High A.  It might even increase his ranking before the end of the season.

Mason Williams is a guy that Law has been very high on for some time now. Accompanying the list was a podcast here http://insider.espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=8157336.  Here is a few quotes from the podcast.   “He is a good athlete with really good feel.”  “Has a pretty good eye on the plate.”  Keith made one comment that I really liked. “I’m all in on Mason Williams”  Law made some more comments about Mason Williams that I would definitely recommend a listen to it.

The farm system hasn’t had a great year mostly because of injuries to three of the top 10 Yankee prospects.   Manny and Jose are both starting to throw again and Romine is rehabbing right now so hopefully the second half of the season they can show why they were top 10 Yankee prospects.

But keep in mind, even on a down year the Yankees have three top 50 prospects and that is always good.
