BINGHAMTON, NY — The Trenton Thunder took a lead in the top of the 1st inning, never trailed in the game and pulled away at the end from the Binghamton Mets in a 6-3 victory Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium.
The Thunder faced knuckleballer Mickey Jannis and immediately plated a pair of runs on him. Tyler Wade began the game with a single, later scored on a passed ball, and then Tyler Austin walked and scored on a double by Lane Adams for a 2-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery was given a two-run lead before he threw a pitch, and he allowed just one hit through his first five innings while neutralizing the B-Mets offense. All-told, the Thunder southpaw allowed three runs on three hits and three walks before getting pulled with two outs in the 6th inning while leading 4-3.
Cale Coshow made his first appearance for the Thunder out of the bullpen after making nine starts to begin the year. He tossed 2.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts before turning the ball over the J.R. Graham for the save in the 9th. Graham continued the hot recent stretch by Thunder relievers with a scoreless 9th inning and his first save in a Thunder uniform.
Over the last nine games Trenton’s bullpen has posted a 1.33 ERA (5 ER in 34.0 IP) and a 2.08 ERA over it’s 21 games (19 ER in 82.2 IP).
Offensively, the Thunder received a three-extra-base-hit night from Adams who doubled in the 1st inning, triples in the 3rd inning and doubled to begin the 6th. The big swing for the Thunder came in the top of the 8th inning however, when Dan Fiorito came up with a pair of runners aboard and one out. His second double of the season scored both men and extended the Thunder lead from 4-3 to 6-3.
