New York Yankees prospect Luis Niebla is continuing his strong season this winter in the starting rotation for Caneros de los Mochis of the Mexican Pacific League. Niebla split the 2015 regular season between the Tampa Yankees and Trenton Thunder, only starting 2 games out of the 33 he appeared in but so far in Mexico he is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA across 2 games.
In his first game this season Niebla went 5 innings to earn the win, allowing 1 hit on 3 hits and walk. His second game came 6 days later and went 7 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits. Opponents are hitting .209 against him this winter with right-handers struggling the most hitting .161.
Also playing in the Mexican Pacific League is right-hander Cesar Vargas. Vargas, 23, was solid out of the bullpen this season for the Trenton Thunder where he was 6-0 with a 2.79 ERA over 67 2/3 innings over 43 games. He had a brief 3-game cameo in Triple-A before the season was over and is now playing for Naranjeros de Hermosillo where in 3 2/3 innings over 3 games he has yet to allow a run or a walk but has allowed 4 hits and struck out 5 batters.
The Yankees prospect that is struggling the most in the MPL is Giovanny Gallegos who in 3 games out of the bullpen for Yaquis de Obregon he has allowed 3 runs over 2 innings of work on 5 hits and striking out 4. Gallegos spent most of 2015 with the Tampa Yankees but also had 3 games in Double-A with the Thunder and 2 games in Triple-A with the RailRiders.
