The rain was no match for the RiverDogs as they defeated the Hickory Crawdads 3-2 on Tuesday night to win their second straight game after an hour and four minute rain delay.
Charleston got out to a hot start in the bottom of the first inning they scored to take a 1-0 lead off a Miguel Andujar single and a line drive double from first baseman Mike Ford. But the RiverDogs were not done scoring early runs, in the bottom of the second Yeicok Calderon launched a lead off home run, his second in Charleston, to stake the home team out to a 2-0 lead.
Calderon was 2-for-4 on the night and is now hitting .333 since his demotion to Charleston from Tampa. Michael O’Neil picked up an RBI on a fielders choice ground out to put the RiverDogs up 3-0, scoring Brandon Thomas.
Those three runs would be all RiverDogs starting pitcher Luis Niebla would need as he tossed five innings of one run ball allowing seven hits and striking out one batter. Angel Rincon came on for two and two thirds of relief allowing one run and turning the game over in the eighth inning to Eric Ruth.
Ruth set down the Crawdads in easy fashion only allowing a single in one and a third innings pitched to notch his fifth save of the season.
The RiverDogs (60-62) try for the sweep of the Crawdads tomorrow afternoon sending Rookie Davis to the mound.
