Two split doubleheaders for Somerset and Hudson Valley complemented hard-fought losses for Scranton and Tampa on a busy Mother’s Day around the system.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (10-19): The RailRiders capped another dismal week with a 2-1 loss to Rochester, to whom they dropped five of the six games in the series.

  • Star of the Game: Hayden Wesneski – 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R (1 ER), 1 BB, 6 K, 83 pitches (60 strikes). Wesneski’s 0-4 record is not at all indicative of the season he’s having. His ERA stands at 2.48 as he continues to await any kind of run support
  • Miguel Andújar: 1-for-4, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base
  • Greg Bird: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts
  • Zach Greene: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 25 pitches (12 strikes)
  • Trevor Lane: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 10 pitches (6 strikes)

Somerset Patriots (17-9): The Patriots lost Sunday’s opener 6-3, but came back to beat New Hampshire in the second game 3-2 to take three of five games for the week.

Game 1

  • Star of the Game: Blake Perkins – 0-for-1, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 stolen base. Perkins has cooled off a bit after his red-hot start, but he’s still filling up the box score. Sunday marked his 14th RBI and seventh stolen base
  • Anthony Volpe: 1-for-4, 1 RBI, 2 strikeouts
  • Luis Medina: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 5 R (3 ER), 3 BB, 2 K, 68 pitches (36 strikes). Medina’s issues with control have flared up this season – he’s walked 11 batters in just 15 innings of work
  • Josh Maciejewski: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K, 23 pitches (15 strikes)
  • Emmanuel Ramirez: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 17 pitches (11 strikes)
  • Nick Ernst: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, 13 pitches (5 strikes)

Game 2

  • Star of the Game: Ken Waldichuk – 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 12 K, 83 pitches (49 strikes). Waldichuk was utterly dominant on Sunday and should not be long for Double-A at this rate, with 40 strikeouts through 23.2 innings
  • Anthony Volpe: 1-for-3, 1 home run (4), 1 RBI, 1 run scored. Though Volpe still hasn’t quite cracked the Mendoza Line, his OPS is up to a respectable .732
  • Brandon Lockridge: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Michael Beltre: 2-for-3, 1 double, 2 RBI, 1 strikeout
  • Barrett Loseke: 2 IP, 1 H, 2 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 1 K, 35 pitches (22 strikes). Loseke locked down the multi-inning save despite allowing the go-ahead run to come to the plate in the seventh

Hudson Valley Renegades (14-12): The ‘Gades shut down Jersey Shore to the tune of just one hit in a 2-0 win of the first game, but dropped the nightcap 4-0, managing just three hits of their own in that one.

Game 1

  • Star of the Game: Edgar Barclay – 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 60 pitches (36 strikes). Barclay earned the win, his third of the season, for his work in long relief
  • Cooper Bowman: 0-for-1, 1 run scored, 2 walks, 2 stolen bases
  • Aldenis Sanchez: 1-for-1, 1 RBI, 2 walks, 1 stolen base
  • T.J. Sikkema: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 26 pitches (20 strikes). The 2019 competitive balance-round selection made his first appearance in competitive action since July 21 of that year, for the Staten Island Yankees

Game 2

  • Trey Sweeney: 1-for-3, 1 double, 2 strikeouts
  • Blas Castaño: 4 IP, 4 H, 4 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 4 K, 70 pitches (47 strikes)

Madison Santos (John Brophy / Pinstriped Prospects)

Tampa Tarpons (13-13): The Tarpons clawed their way back with three runs in the top of the ninth, but ended up falling in walk-off fashion 6-5 in Bradenton – though they still emerged with a series win.

  • Star of the Game: Madison Santos – 1-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts. Santos struck what looked to be a massive blow with a two-run single in the ninth, then came around the score the tying run on a fielder’s choice
  • Jasson Dominguez: 2-for-4, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout. Dominguez has quietly put together a six-game on-base streak, and is slugging .481 in the month of May

  • Kevin Milam: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 2 K, 16 pitches (11 strikes). Milam recorded the first two outs quickly in the ninth, but his fielders let him down and the winning run scored on an error
