Pinstriped Performances: After The Storm

Hurricane Ida left a path of destruction up and down the East Coast, wiped out Wednesday’s entire slate of games, and left the Patriots’ home ballpark underwater. Somerset, on the road this week, joined Hudson Valley in playing two games on Thursday as a result.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (59-42): Scranton mounted a spirited rally in the ninth, but fell 5-3 to Buffalo, who also leapfrogged them in the standings as a result.

  • Star of the Game: Matt Krook – 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 85 pitches (51 strikes). Krook was extremely unlucky to take the loss in this one
  • Gleyber Torres: 1-for-3. Torres was supposed to report back to New York for tomorrow’s game. He was removed from this contest after being hit on the hand by a pitch and his status is unclear
  • Greg Allen: 1-for-4, 1 triple, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout
  • Rob Brantly: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI
  • Trey Amburgey: 2-for-4, 1 RBI, 2 strikeouts
  • Greg Weissert: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 24 pitches (15 strikes)
  • Nick Nelson: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 0 K, 26 pitches (15 strikes)
  • Nick Green: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 10 pitches (5 strikes)
  • Sal Romano: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 19 pitches (12 strikes)

Somerset Patriots (61-43): The Patriots defeated Bowie in the first game of their twin bill 3-2, then lost the nightcap 7-4.

Game 1

  • Star of the Game: Dermis Garcia – 1-for-3, 1 home run (27), 3 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout. Garcia drove in all three Patriots runs in one fell swoop with his league-leading 27th homer of the season
  • Oswald Peraza: 0-for-2, 1 walk, 1 strikeout, 1 stolen base
  • Oswaldo Cabrera: 1-for-2, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Michael Beltre: 1-for-3, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout, 1 stolen base
  • Luis Medina: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 10 K, 93 pitches (62 strikes). The right-hander has 22 strikeouts over his last two starts, spanning 10 innings
  • Kevin Gadea: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 17 pitches (12 strikes). Gadea evened his record at 1-1
  • Addison Russ: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 23 pitches (12 strikes). Russ recorded his third save

Game 2

  • Star of the Game: Oswald Peraza – 4-for-4, 3 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base. Peraza was virtually the entire Somerset offense in this second game. With the barrage, he lifted his batting average to .295 and his OPS north of .800
  • Michael Beltre: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 strikeout
  • Mickey Gasper: 2-for-3, 1 triple, 2 runs scored, 1 strikeout
  • Jhony Brito: 5 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 88 pitches (53 strikes)
  • Zach Greene: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 22 pitches (11 strikes)

Austin Wells (Robert M Pimpsner/Pinstriped Prospects)

Hudson Valley Renegades (63-41): The ‘Gades were thoroughly outclassed in Greensboro, getting swept in a doubleheader 10-7 and 2-0.

Game 1

  • Star of the Game: Austin Wells – 2-for-4, 1 home run (5), 3 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 strikeout. Wells has homered in two of his last three games
  • Anthony Volpe: 2-for-4, 1 home run (11), 1 double, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 strikeout. Volpe trails only Dermis Garcia in homers in the Yankees system, with 25 in total on the year
  • Elijah Dunham: 1-for-4, 1 home run (7), 2 RBI, 1 run scored
  • Matt Sauer: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R (2 ER), 3 BB, 7 K, 85 pitches (55 strikes). Sauer’s High-A career has consisted of three very good starts, including tonight’s, and two very bad ones thus far
  • Matt Minnick: 0.0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 11 pitches (4 strikes)
  • Carlos Espinal: 0.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 18 pitches (15 strikes)

Game 2

  • Star of the Game: Mitch Spence – 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 93 pitches (60 strikes). Much like Krook with Scranton, Spence was a tough-luck loser on a night where his offense couldn’t get anything going
  • Anthony Volpe: 1-for-3, 1 stolen base
  • Elijah Dunham: 1-for-3, 1 double, 1 strikeout
  • Eric Wagaman: 1-for-2, 1 double, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Freicer Perez: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 18 pitches (12 strikes)

Tampa Tarpons (67-35): The Tarpons took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the eighth and then served up a four-spot, eventually losing to Bradenton 9-6.

  • Star of the Game: Trey Sweeney – 2-for-5, 1 home run (5), 1 triple, 2 RBI, 1 run scored. Sweeney is picking up right where he left off after a strong August
  • Jasson Dominguez: 0-for-4, 1 run scored, 1 walk
  • Antonio Gomez: 1-for-4, 1 double, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Anthony Garcia: 2-for-4, 1 home run (3), 1 double, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout. Garcia has been red hot since his promotion and boasts a 1.262 OPS
  • Benjamin Cowles: 1-for-2, 1 home run (3), 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 stolen base
  • Juan Carela: 3.2 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 76 pitches (40 strikes)
  • Clay Aguilar: 4 IP, 1 H, 4 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 8 K, 72 pitches (52 strikes). Aguilar pitched very well but was undone by two consecutive errors by his fielders to open up the eighth inning
  • Carson Coleman: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 5 pitches (4 strikes)

FCL Yankees (18-13): The scheduled matchup between the Yankees and Phillies was postponed until September 14.

DSL Yankees 1 (19-16): The Yanks rode some timely hitting and a lockdown relief performance to a 7-3 win over Phillies Red.

  • Star of the Game: Donys Garcia – 4.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K. The 20-year-old Venezuelan is carrying a 2.39 ERA
  • Fidel Montero: 2-for-3, 1 home run (4), 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 strikeout, 1 stolen base. Though not hitting for average, the youngster has an .855 OPS and 16 stolen bases
  • Felix Negueis: 2-for-4, 1 double, 2 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 strikeouts
  • Oscar Silverio: 2-for-4, 1 double, 1 RBI, 2 strikeouts
  • Daniel Guerrero: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 3 K
  • Ruben Castillo: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 4 K

DSL Yankees 2 (18-17): The Yanks fell to the Rockies 9-2.

  • Star of the Game: Ronny Rojas – 2-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 walk, 1 strikeout. The 20-year-old drove in both Yankees runs and carries an .888 OPS
  • Joel Mendez: 1-for-4, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts
  • Omar Martinez: 1-for-4, 1 double, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
  • Luis Arejula: 4 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
  • Luis Urbano: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
